Gender balance issue

Recommended Posts

My previous two playthroughs ended because of (from what I could gather) gender balance issue. By the time I reached medieval my population started to drop. I've had pop drops earlier of course but they were caused by various reasons that were fixable.

Game overs in my last two games was caused by a sudden pop drop of people dying of old age and by some random chance I am left with only female nuggets or only male nuggets. And basically, I can't do anything to fix the issue at that point. Like some people pointed out on Discord that my population dropped because of something else, trust me, it didn't. Nuggets just died of old age (except a few that died of thirst and whatnot, but those guys were stuck underground which is a known bug at this point). Every nugget had their various status bars full. No one was tired, injured, unhappy and whatever. They simply died of old age. I also had no one working in the Hunters Hut because I know those guys can die easily.

Cupids God ability is also very inefficient, especially in a scenario where your gender balance is destroyed like mine was. In my opinion, nuggets should either be sexless or we should have a research that allows gay couples to reproduce.

Wolves were never an issue to me, nor were tornadoes. Gender balance though? Real game killer.

While I'm here I'll point out a couple of other minor issues I've encountered:
- Geology research text is way to big, big enough to hide what the effect actually does unless "scroll" down the whole panel
- If you click a research in the panel that's currently being developed it will instantly be canceled. Add a confirmation popup with the "Are you sure you want to cancel it?"
- Nuggets who work at the Wood Refinery should gather wood themselves if there is no wood in the local Storage. I've had my two nuggets at the WR doing nothing for ages even though the refinery was in the middle of the forest

- By the time you reach medieval era the city kind of looks... barren. It would be very helpful if there was a building in which the nuggets focus on regrowing trees.

As I said on Discord you simply have to stay on top of the population problem. You might have gotten really unlucky with them just being born women over a longer period of time, but generally you just have to make sure they mate as much as possible and as soon as they are able, you mate them. The cupid power does come with limitations, so you have to understand when it's the most optimal to use.

As for the tree issue it's kind of the point of the game. The resources are supposed to be finite and as you cut down trees it'll affect the global warming, effectively making the temperatures worse in each season. They haven't implemented the temperature stuff yet, but once that comes live the rate at which you cut down trees will greatly affect your civilization.

As for the other bugs:
I'd like to second the research stuff. It's definitely annoying when you accidentally click a research that is being developed and it completely stops and can't be reinstated at the previous progress. There is also a problem where sometimes the researches switch places and just start a new one even though it was far behind in the queue (effectively interrupting the one that was ongoing and making it start over at a later point).
There is also a problem with the research tech in that you can research the Well upgrade that requires a piece of metal to be built without actually having ''Mining'' researched. It can cause a lot of problems if you unlock this when you are still trying to get a good coverage of wells as it completely blocks you from building new ones until you've successfully mined some iron. Possible fixed include either properly gating the well researched behind ''Mining'', requiring that as a requirment, or give us the possibility to build old styles of buildings despite having unlocked more advanced ones. Could be a life saver to be able to build something requiring lower-grade resources when you struggle gathering the higher-grade ones. I had to restart a playthrough because of that.
I do think that the Wood Refinery should have them chop their own wood when there is a shortage as well. Have to agree with OP on that.

The problem is to even build a decent civ, you pretty much HAVE to clear cut the planet.. this really is a balance issue.. trees should give like 5X more wood

But yeah, the game makes sure there's equal genders in the beginning, then it gets random

They used to let same sex couples breed, but not any more LOL

I even noticed that I've had nuggets who basically died of old age without having a single child... were never married either. I mean I understand the point of the Cupid ability, but do I really have to play a matchmaking God constantly? Surely as a God I have more important things to attend to :D

Exactly.. the game should keep an eye on if there's too many uncoupled males or females and adjust births.

Normally this isn't an issue with a LARGE population , but in a sim game with only a few hundred people, births must be controlled

I agree that the game should control matching making for the most part. I see the cupid ability being really handy in the instance of mating two nuggets that have desirable traits in order to keep desirable traits within the population.
