Patch 18: Lizard Candy - My Feedback

Hello,

I don't know how others feel about the current balance of the game, but, here my experiences.

I will start with the good.

  • I think the new perk and upgrades system is nice. Feels much more fluent than before. I also think that removing the negative effects was a good decision.
  • The happiness stat is a nice addition overall.
  • A lot of the bug fixes made the game more playable allowing me to progress further in the game.
  • The adjusted save mechanics are good. I like it. its really taking shape.

The bad.

  • The population reproduces like crazy and consumes the food so quickly that pretty much everywhere I have stone huts and by the second or 3rd winter they are all starving. I can't even properly get to the upgrades because all I am doing is literally just building water pumps, farms and fishing huts. And by the time the refineries are built the whole population is dying.
  • Nuggets needs are growing but their productiveness is not really there, I feel like the population cannot produce enough to sustain itself. Perhaps this is due to the fact that I cannot get the upgrades going (assuming they work). Or perhaps I am doing something weird and allowing the population to explode too fast.
  • Needs drop quicker than there is time to refill them and do anything productive.  I think it takes a long time to travel from one location to another. Not sure how to address that one.
  • Nuggets get stuck on each other.... Yeah...  I have to use my divine intervention and sort them out.
  • I don't believe cemetery should depress, isn't the whole purpose of it to allow for closure?  If anything they should allow Nuggets to regain some of the happiness by visiting their family graves. Have lived next to cemeteries quite a few times, never had any bad feelings about it. But that's me I guess.

That's all for now.

Yeah, I defy anyone to get beyond 80 nuggets. 82 is about my limit for this patch, and we're talking about 8 farms, 7 fisheries, six eateries and of course the countless water pumps and engineer buildings needed for support.

One problem I think is nuggets starting eat raw food before it can get taken to eateries. Another is probably distance. Even if there's plenty of food/water nearby, a nugget might need to rest/mate in their hut which could be miles away from their workplace once you expand enough, which causes all kinds of problems.

Also windstorms.

I'm always 100 percent prepared for them with a forecast tower and bunkers. BUT, they can last a long ass time, and when the nuggets are safe chilling in the bunkers nothing gets done, especially in the food industry and maintenance. And if they hit right before a long winter you are doubly screwed, prepared or not.

@Unforked I absolutely feel your pain :D
It's more or less my experience so far.
I haven't gotten as crazy with the eateries and farms though, cause, I really tried to push for the upgrades, but it has been a tall task :/

Also the more crowded it becomes the more chance of them getting stuck too. Especially walking by each other.

Don't want to diss too much though, there has been a lot of improvement in the game, in my opinion. Also, the monthly updates are nice :)

Thank you guys for your feedback. We will definitely play with the Numbers. Happy to see that most of other things feel alright for you, we will spend more time on the balance. Please continue leaving us your suggestions!

Just want to add that the game is extremely addictive and fun to play (since my last post came off a little rant-ish), not to mention beautiful. I'm a huge fan of the direction it's going in. I understand getting A.I. and balance right is a monumental task, not to mention everything else. :)

I completely agree. It's taking time but every end game makes me want to try again (even though at the moment is always almost the same). Can't wait to see new eras and ideas :emoticon-00148-yes:.

First of all, I love this game! Addictive, and fun to play. What I do not like is the high maintenance of all buildings. Every time I am close to pushing the upgrades from refineries whole civilization collapse because all buildings are in rubbles And I have 4 or 5 engineers working.

It's hard to keep up with nuggets population explosion. Food, water, eateries and witch doctors take up most of the population employment.

However, I still love it :D I do not know why but every time my nuggets die I want to try again.

Btw, when all nuggets die, there should be some end game announcement and possibility to start over with new civilization without restarting the game. Or there is and I just do not see it? I know I can load the old games but start a new life is possible only when you start the game, isn't it?

I find that being very picky with what planet to accept, even more picky about picking a starting location can get you to 90+ with little work.  I just can't keep that number of Nuggets going for long.  I certainly haven't been able to do any upgrades with the tiny trickle of processed stone and wood the factories output.

Firstly, don't accept planets without at least one, preferably three or more, deep lakes.  You want long, deep lakes so you can throw a lot of pumps on them without thinking.  Good shorelines that aren't all curvy or covered in mountains are helped by the lakes being long.  Just be aware that the pathing AI picks resources for generic harvesting based on distance from the evolution tower, not from the harvesting Nugget.  This means that a juicy tree on the other side of a large lake may cause Nuggets to suicide walk across a quarter of the globe for 2 wood.

You get up to 8 farms so you know that  you always want a large space around the tower for the constant Stone Hut spam.  However, at six eateries you're probably wasting food.  I would not be surprised if a lot ended up stuck uncooked in eateries.  Nuggets are happy to eat raw food from fisheries, warehouses, bushes and sitting in a farm.  But it the food is in a bunker or eatery it is out of reach.  This means your cooking nuggets can get stuck walking from fishery to fishery trying to feed themselves instead of cooking more food. Since the AI is too stupid to know that the resource was consumed you will end up with caravans of hungry Nuggets walking from empty building to empty building instead of working.

I find that building forest or desert farms are a must.  The Malina and Plum resource are low frequency but high quantity dumps.  This means that the eateries cannot absorb all the food, locking it away from use until cooked by Nuggets more interested in getting a Massage than frying fish.

One good trick to remember is to rotate the Doctor out for a patient.  An injured doctor automatically heals on their own.  This can save an almost dead Nugget. It's also essential when you are super low on herbs and have a large backlog of injured Nuggets to process.  While you might not care that an 80 season old laborer falls over dead from injury, losing one of a breeding pair after a major die back can hamper or prevent a bounce back.  Double so if they were the farmer and a crop is about to spoil.

Finally: save scum.  A lot.  Use your saved games.  Your first play-through will teach you how the area you picked worked.  It will be very helpful for figuring out where to put things or what resources to 'Divine Power' harvest to help out.  At the least you get a different random set of perks that can make or break the mid-game.  I've had games from the same save that barely hit 50 before dying out.  The same save with a little different building strategy easily hit 92.
